Background[]

The FFC Cambridge Process is an electrochemical method in which solid metal compounds, particularly oxides, are cathodically reduced to the respective metals or alloys in molten salts.[1]

Use by Sanchez Aluminum[]

FFC Cambridge Process

Loretta Sanchez, CEO and founder of Sanchez Aluminum modified the FFC Cambridge Process in order to use it to smelt aluminum from anorthite ore harvested on the Moon.

Sanchez uses electrolysis between the anorthite anode, dipping it in a molten calcium chloride salt bath, and carbon cathodes created from the CO2 by-product to literally pull the aluminum atoms from the ore.[2]
